THE SHORT ANSWER

An IPTV EPG is the programme schedule shown beside live channels. A player commonly reads that schedule from XMLTV data and matches its channel identifiers to your playlist. A working video stream does not prove the guide loaded, and a guide entry does not provide access to the stream.

What an EPG adds to everyday viewing.

EPG stands for electronic programme guide, also written electronic program guide. Instead of opening channels one by one, you can see what is showing now and what is scheduled next. Depending on the source and player, listings can include titles, descriptions and start and end times.

The useful distinction is between three jobs: the playlist identifies the available channels, the stream provides the video, and the guide describes the schedule. If a channel plays but its programme panel is empty, keep the working playback configuration and investigate the guide. Our playlist explanation covers the broader connection formats.

A guide is a convenience layer, not a replacement viewing subscription. It also does not establish that every channel carries future listings, catch-up or recording. Check the functions you actually plan to use, with the exact app and channel involved.

For example, SmartOne’s own instructions distinguish account-panel EPG from a normal playlist’s external XMLTV source. The official Kodi add-on reference describes a player that supports both M3U and EPG. Those examples establish their documented options; they are not universal menu instructions for every IPTV app.

Keep a private guide URL private. It can contain account details even if the address looks like an ordinary file link. When asking for help, show the error and source label with private URL parameters hidden.

Set up the guide in a controlled order.

  1. Confirm a representative live channel already plays. That gives you a separate playback baseline.
  2. Check the device’s date, time and time zone. Write down any manual guide offset already configured.
  3. Find the EPG or TV-guide source setting documented for your exact player. Add or confirm the intended source, and associate it with the intended playlist where the app requires that.
  4. Run one guide update and allow the import to finish. Check for an actual successful update rather than repeatedly pressing refresh.
  5. Check a known channel’s current programme and its next programme. If only some channels have listings, move to channel matching instead of replacing the entire source.

Keep the last working source details and player settings before making changes. Avoid wiping the app as the first troubleshooting step: doing so can also remove playlists, favourites and the evidence you needed to compare. A small, repeatable check is more useful than changing the source, the clock and the app all at once.

Why one channel has listings and another does not.

In XMLTV, a programme refers to a channel identifier. In a compatible M3U workflow, a player can use the playlist’s tvg-id to find that schedule channel. The IPTV Simple developer documentation describes identifier matching and fallback name checks for that add-on. Other players may use different rules.

  stop="20261024203000 +0000">
  <title>Evening Update</title>
</programme>

The repeated identifier is the connection. A familiar logo or a channel name ending in “HD” can help a person recognise it, but the player still needs a supported matching rule. For a partial failure, compare one missing channel’s playlist ID with the guide’s ID. Ask for a corrected mapping when they differ, rather than editing every channel’s name by trial and error.

Fix a shifted schedule without confusing two kinds of time shift.

First check the device clock and time zone. Then check whether the source schedule and the player are applying an offset. The XMLTV format documentation supports explicit time-zone information; its default when no zone is specified is UTC. In the example above, +0000 explicitly identifies UTC. Do not assume a missing offset means your own local time.

Compare one current programme before applying a global correction. If every listing is consistently displaced, record the existing setting and test the smallest relevant correction supported by your player. If only one channel is wrong, a global offset can break channels that were already correct.

An EPG time shift adjusts displayed schedule times. Pausing or rewinding a live stream is a separate playback feature, and catch-up needs an available archive and support from the viewing source and player. The developer’s separate EPG, timeshift and catch-up sections make that distinction. Changing a guide offset cannot create archived video.

When contacting support, include the app’s exact name and version, device model, affected channel, displayed programme time and whether live video still works. A focused report lets us distinguish a guide-data question from a playback or account question. Never send a password to explain a time-zone mismatch.

Put the guide inside a viewing plan that fits.

A useful TV setup makes the next programme easy to find and gives you a clear place to ask for help. Before choosing Apollo, identify the channels and languages your household uses and ask about the guide coverage that matters to you. Use the dated lineup overview as a starting point, then confirm your priorities.

Apollo offers one payment for a selected term, no automatic renewal and 1–5 simultaneous-screen choices. The current one-screen monthly plan is $14.99 USD. View the full plan totals, choose the allowance you need and receive payment and manual-activation instructions by email. A separate third-party player fee may apply.

If you are using SmartOne on a TV, the SmartOne setup walkthrough connects the app, playlist and guide steps. If you are working on Windows, use the documented Windows guide. This article explains formats and diagnosis; it does not claim a new device or guide-coverage test.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What does EPG mean in IPTV?

EPG means electronic programme guide: the schedule information a player displays beside live channels, including titles and programme times where supplied.

Is an EPG URL the same as my M3U URL?

They serve different jobs. M3U identifies streams; an EPG source supplies schedule data. Some supported setups carry the guide address in playlist metadata or obtain it through the account.

Why can live TV work with no guide?

The stream and programme information are separate. The video can play while the guide source, channel match or schedule data needs attention.

What should match between M3U and XMLTV?

For identifier-based matching, the playlist tvg-id should correspond to the XMLTV channel identifier, which programme records also reference.

Why are all my programme times wrong?

Check the device clock, time zone, source timestamps and any existing player guide offset. Compare one known programme before changing the entire guide.

Does an EPG enable catch-up or recording?

No. A schedule entry is not an archive or recorder. Those features depend on the player, viewing source, available content and supported configuration.

Should I add a random public EPG to fix missing channels?

Start with the source intended for your playlist. A different guide may use different channel identifiers or have different coverage, so a reachable URL alone does not establish a match.

What should I send Apollo support about a guide problem?

Send the device, exact app and version, affected channel, displayed time, last successful guide update and whether video plays. Hide account credentials and private links.
